The Belle of Amherst
About the Show —

The one-woman play is an intimate living autobiography about the life of one of
America’s most prolific and well loved poets, Emily Dickinson.  Emily, a non-
conformist and child-like 53-year-old woman relates snippets of her writings and
personal anecdotes as far back as her early childhood.

Miss Dickinson welcomes the audience as a guest in her beloved sanctuary, “The
Homestead” and entertains them with jovial and stimulating conversation while
exchanging recipes and details of her life as if they were small talk among dear old
friends.

The play opens a window into a unique place in American history and literature
and a startlingly ironic look at a woman who was described as lonely, shut-in, and
“Squire Edwards’ half-cracked daughter.”  In truth she was a charming and
eloquent lady, well loved by family and friends who found themselves lucky
enough to have her acquaintance.

According to Emily, her running from the neighbors, sending odd little notes, and
surprising would-be sightseers, is simply a way for her to enjoy her “menagerie,”
the villagers of Amherst.

This production of “The Belle of Amherst” is dedicated to the memory of Bettye
Elmore, former owner of the Backstage Dinner Theatre and prominent
Chattanooga theatrical personality. Belle was one of her favorite plays and one of
the most memorable roles she performed in her theatrical career.

The Belle of Amherst stars Rosemary Bunn in the role of Emily Dickinson, and the
event is produced and directed by Randy Forester.

Admission is $12.50 for all seats. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. each night.  The play runs
approximately 2 hours including a 15 minute intermission. Refreshments will be
provided. Seating in the Heritage House mansion is limited so please reserve early.
